Prevents direct contact of the adhesive material with the skin tissue.
Protects neurovascular bundles or bony prominences. It is applied before bandaging.

Initially designed to protect the skin from adhesive bandages, pretape now serves many other purposes: holds ice packs in place, functions as a patellar strap, or serves as a finish line for a hundred-meter sprint.
